ABOUT FRIGILIANA

In the most Eastern part of Málaga, approximately 45 minute drive from Malaga airport, in the region known as the Axarquia and nestled between the Almijara, Tejeda and Alhama mountain ranges lies the beautiful white-washed village of Frigiliana.

At 300 metres above sea level and with a subtropical climate it´s prized historical quarter of Moorish heritage arises with narrow streets filled with whitewashed houses most of which are adorned with an injection of colour from local plants and flowers such as geraniums.

It´s Arab structure qualifies it as one of the most popular in the province of Málaga and has even received an award for the most beautiful village in Spain.

Frigiliana boasts a wide range of restaurants offering local, national and international cuisine with all dishes made with locally produced olive oil and muscatel grapes.  Some local traditional handicrafts are still to be found in Frigiliana, such as woven grass baskets, water carriers made from pumpkins, clay and wood, all available from small outlets in the historic quarter of the village.

Fiestas

Frigiliana celebrates several events throughout the year.   Amongst the religious traditions is Semana Santa (Easter), which enjoys a prestigious and respected following that is accentuated during the procession of the soledad , (Good Friday) in which the ladies dressed in black walk through the streets of the historic part of the village illuminating them with candles, this particular procession is locally known as "el camino de la Dolorosa".

Don't miss the explosion of colour and fragrance in Spring during the "Dia de la Cruz (day of the cross) on the 3rd May. It´s beautiful to see the floral crosses carefully prepared and placed throughout the village, all of which are arranged by the local residents. This is enjoyed by many visitors to the village.

In August they celebrate the festival of the 3 cultures, an array of music and gastronomy, held around the last weekend in the month.

Weather

Frigiliana enjoys a unique micro-climate, resulting in long hot summers and warm sunny winters. It is usual to get approx 6 hours of sun in the middle of winter and an average winter temperature of 17C makes Frigiliana an ideal winter holiday destination.

ABOUT NERJA

Nerja is a typically Spanish resort, second to none with its own special atmosphere and culture, with a stunning backdrop of the mountains, the Mediterranean to the front and almost constant sunshine: no wonder Nerja is popular all year round.

Nerja is the place to come if you are looking for a lively resort with fabulous beaches and has a vibrant nightlife with its own 'Tuti Fruti Square'. Nerja also has a quiet side where you can enjoy a round of golf or a game of tennis. If you want to take a break from the sun-drenched coastline, with Nerja you do not have to travel far to discover the more traditional side of Spain. Nerja is situated in the province of Andalucia, home of flamenco dancing, bullfights, orange groves, castles and sleepy villages perched on the slopes of the skiing resort of Sierra Nevada.

One of the main attractions in Nerja is the caves - with its impressive stalactites and stalagmites creating a beautiful subterranean scenery - which has made Nerja famous.

Evenings in Nerja are more low-key - maybe a stroll along the famous Balcon de Europa to admire the wonderful views before relaxing over dinner and a bottle of wine. If you love sunshine, you'll love Nerja and the Costa Del Sol.

Fiestas:

As is the case in all of Andalucia the people of Nerja love to party and never more so than for the annual Nerja Festival (Feria de Nerja) which takes place in October. Nearly everyone seems to take the week off work and there are street parties going on throughout the night. The fairground also comes to town and is packed with mothers and daughters in traditional flamenco dresses.

Some of the other main Nerja festivals are in February when the town celebrates Carnaval, in March/April for the traditional Semana Santa (Holy Week) celebrations and June for San Juan when barbecues take place all along the beach. The 16th July is a great day to be in Nerja to witness the Virgen del Carmen festival when a statue of the Virgin Mary is carried through the town to a fishing boat and is then taken out to sea.  Also in July is the Festival de la Cueva when classical music concerts take place in the Nerja caves.

If you're in Nerja over the Christmas period bars and restaurants will most likely close early on Christmas Eve but Christmas Day will be a normal opening day for them. The big day over this period is the evening of January 5th when the Reyes Magos (Three Wise Men) arrive in town to give gifts to the children.
